    Frequently
    Asked Questions

What should I bring with me?

The only two things you need to start bouldering are chalk and climbing shoes – we provide both!

Climbing shoes are required on the wall so if you’re planning to rent a pair please bring a set of clean socks to wear with them. Shoes are $7 to hire, or free if it’s your first visit.

Liquid chalk (used to stop your hands from getting sweaty) is supplied for free at every gym.

    Do I need to book?

No need to book, you can arrive any time during our opening hours.

For groups of 15 climbers we would appreciate the organiser contacting us ahead of time so we can streamline your arrival. We are also happy to offer a 9% discount on the cost of entry if a group of 9 or more climbers pays in a single transaction.

Events with a private instructor can be organised by contacting your local gym.

    Is it beginner friendly?

If you can climb a ladder, there are boulders you can climb! Whilst it may look a little intimidating at first, bouldering is very accessible and easy to get into. For many of our community members bouldering is the first sport they’ve ever connected with.

If you’d prefer to visit when it’s quiet, we’d recommend visiting before 5pm on weekdays or on weekend evenings – no booking required.

    What about safety?

Bouldering is a fun and challenging sport, but not entirely without risks. We offer you the facilities to climb, however, you remain responsible for your own actions when climbing, falling or jumping off. Never do anything that feels unsafe.

Bouldering walls are 4.5m at their highest, but our easier levels finish a bit lower. ‘Down climb’ grips are provided at the top of every climb to aid your descent and large purpose built crash mats are at the base of all climbing walls. To see it in action and learn more, you can watch our safety video.

To ensure that everyone can enjoy climbing in a safe and responsible manner you must adhere to all house and safety rules on gym signage and mentioned by our staff.

    Youth Climbing Guidelines

    • Climbers under 18 years of age must have a waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian. Siblings, parents of friends or other non-legal guardians are not eligible to sign a waiver on a child’s behalf.
    • Children under the age of 16 must be supervised by an adult for the duration of their session. Although bouldering does not require belaying, active supervision is required at all times to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all.
    • One adult supervisor is necessary per 2 children climbing.
    • Birthday parties and group events are strictly not permitted.

    Is it child friendly?

Although we endeavour to be an inclusive facility, 9 Degrees is first and foremost an adult climbing venue most appropriate for those 16 and older.

If your child is new to climbing we would recommend visiting a gym that caters specifically for children. They provide age and height appropriate climbing, allowing kids the freedom to challenge and enjoy themselves in a more playful environment. We’d be more than happy to give you a local recommendation if you get in touch with any of our gyms.

If your child is familiar with climbing and 9 Degrees is right for you, please see our ‘Youth Climbing Guidelines’ under the next heading.
